1. Kurt Vonnegut Replies to Students

Dear Xavier High School, and Ms. Lockwood, and Messrs Perin, McFeely, Batten, Maurer and Congiusta: I thank you for your friendly letters. You sure cognize how to hearten up a truly old geezer ( 84 ) in his sundown old ages. I don’t make public visual aspects any more because I now resemble nil so much as an iguana. What I had to state to you, furthermore, would non take long, to humor: Practice any art, music, vocalizing, dancing, moving, pulling, picture, sculpting, poesy, fiction, essays, coverage, no affair how good or severely, non to acquire money and celebrity, but to see going, to happen out what’s inside you, to do your psyche grow. Seriously! I mean get downing right now, do art and make it for the remainder of your lives. Pull a good story or nice image of Ms. Lockwood, and give it to her. Dance place after school, and sing in the shower and on and on. Make a face in your mashed murphies. Feign you’re Count Dracula. Here’s an assignment for tonight, and I hope Ms. Lockwood will fail you if you don’t make it: Write a six line verse form, about anything, but rhymed. No just tennis without a net. Make it every bit good as you perchance can. But don’t Tell anybody what you’re making. Don’t show it or declaim it to anybody, non even your girlfriend or parents or whatever, or Ms. Lockwood. OK? Tear it up into bitty pieces, and fling them into widely separated rubbish recepticals. You will happen that you have already been gloriously rewarded for your verse form. You have experienced going, learned a batch more about what’s inside you, and you have made your psyche grow. God bless you all! Kurt Vonnegut

2. Bill Watterson’s Comic Advice

Dear Todd, Thank you for your letter. Here are some general amusing strip cartooning tips that I’ve tried to do helpful for people at all degrees of promotion. I hope these will use to your work. 1. Materials are non of import, so long as your work reproduces and reduces clearly. It’s what you do WITH the stuffs that counts. 2. I think characters are more of import than gags. Any cartoonist ought to be able to come up with amusing jokes, but the best strips have rounded, complex characters that readers can care about. Cartoon characters should be more than standing props to present gags. 3. Don’t imitate other strips. Editors are looking for something new and original. 4. Most significantly, have fun with your work, and pattern writing and pulling all you can. Good fortune, W.B. Watterson

3. Gandhi Writes to Hitler to Stop War

Dear friend, Friends have been pressing me to compose to you for the interest of humanity. But I have resisted their petition, because of the feeling that any letter from me would be an impudence. Something Tells me that I must non cipher and that I must do my entreaty for whatever it may be deserving. It is rather clear that you are today the one individual in the universe who can forestall a war which may cut down humanity to a barbarian province. Must you pay that monetary value for an object nevertheless worthy it may look to you to be? Will you listen to the entreaty of 1 who has intentionally shunned the method of war non without considerable success? Any manner I anticipate your forgiveness, if I have erred in writing to you. I remain, Your sincere friend M. K. Gandhi

4. Stephen Fry on Depression

Dear Crystal, I’m so regretful to hear that life is acquiring you down at the minute. Goodness knows, it can be so tough when nil seems to suit and small seems to be carry throughing. I’m non certain there’s any specific advice I can give that will help convey life back its relish. Although they mean good, it’s sometimes rather chafing to be reminded how much people love you when you don’t love yourself that much. I’ve found that it’s of some help to believe of one’s tempers and feelings about the universe as being similar to endure: Here are some obvious things about the conditions: It’s existent. You can’t alter it by wishing it off. If it’s dark and rainy it truly is dark and showery and you can’t change it. It might be dark and showery for two hebdomads in a row. BUT It will be cheery one twenty-four hours. It isn’t under one’s control as to when the Sun comes out, but come out it will. One twenty-four hours. It truly is the same with one’s tempers, I think. The incorrect attack is to believe that they are semblances. They are existent. Depression, anxiousness, listlessness – these are every bit existent as the conditions – AND EQUALLY NOT UNDER ONE’S CONTROL. Not one’s mistake. BUT They will go through: they truly will. In the same manner that one has to accept the conditions, so one has to accept how one feels about life sometimes. “Today’s a dirt twenty-four hours, ” is a absolutely realistic attack. It’s all about happening a sort of mental umbrella. “Hey-ho, it’s raining inside: it isn’t my mistake and there’s nil I can make about it, but sit it out. But the Sun may good come out tomorrow and when it does, I shall take full advantage.” I don’t cognize if any of that is of any usage: it may non look it, and if so, I’m sorry. I merely thought I’d bead you a line to wish you good in your hunt to happen a little more pleasance and intent in life. Very best wants Stephen Fry

5. The Best Screen Letter Ever

Beloved Sir: I like words. I like fat pantry words, such as sludge, depravity, gluey, toady. I like solemn, angular, decrepit words, such as priggish, bloody-minded, pecunious, valedictory. I like specious, black-is-white words, such as mortician, liquidate, tonsorial, demi-monde. I like suave “V” words, such as Svengali, svelte, bravura, vitality. I like crunchy, toffee, crackly words, such as sliver, grapnel, jostling, crusty. I like sullen, crabbed, scowling words, such as skulk, glare, scabby, peasant. I like Oh-Heavens, my-gracious, land’s-sake words, such as tricksy, Tucker, genteel, horrid. I like elegant, flowery words, such as estivate, peregrinate, Elysium, Alcyone. I like wormy, squirmy, mealy words, such as crawl, blubber, squeal, trickle. I like sniggly, chortling words, such as cowlick, gurgle, bubble and belch. I like the word film writer better than copywriter, so I decided to discontinue my occupation in a New York advertisement bureau and seek my fortune in Hollywood, but before taking the dip I went to Europe for a twelvemonth of survey, contemplation and horsing about. I have merely returned and I still like words. May I have a few with you? Robert Pirosh 385 Madison Avenue Room 610 New York Eldorado 5-6024

8. Pixar Movies Don’t Get Finished

Hey Adam! First off, allow me apologise for taking so long to react to your really sort letter. Thingss are reasonably balmy around here. You had asked for an autographed exposure of me ; I don’t truly have anything like that, non being celebrated. But here is a drawing of me for you. I’m certain you can see the resemblance. You are certain right about the importance of a good narrative in films. Unfortunately, it’s non every bit easy as it sounds. It takes a batch of work ( and rework, and rework and rework ) to acquire it right. And even so rather frequently we’re non 100 % pleased. As John Lasseter likes to state, our movies don’t acquire finished, they merely acquire released. Hope you enjoy “UP” following twelvemonth!

9. 1964: Kubrick’s Collaboration Odyssey

Dear Mr Clarke: It’s a really interesting happenstance that our common friend Caras mentioned you in a conversation we were holding about a Questar telescope. I had been a great supporter of your books for rather a clip and had ever wanted to discourse with you the possibility of making the proverbial “really good” science-fiction film. My chief involvement lies along these wide countries, of course presuming great secret plan and character: 1. The grounds for believing in the being of intelligent extra-terrestrial life. 2. The impact ( and possibly even lack of impact in some quarters ) such find would hold on Earth in the close hereafter. 3. A infinite investigation with a landing and geographic expedition of the Moon and Mars. Roger tells me you are be aftering to come to New York this summer. Do you hold an inflexible agenda? If non, would you see coming earlier with a position to a meeting, the intent of which would be to find whether an thought might be or originate which could sufficiently involvement both of us enough to desire to join forces on a screenplay? Incidentally, “Sky & Telescope” advertise a figure of Scopess. If one has the room for a medium size range on a pedestal, say the size of a camera tripod, is at that place any peculiar theoretical account in a category by itself, as the Questar is for little portable Scopess? Best respects, Stanley Kubrick

You are really fortunate to hold two parents who care profoundly for you. They are lucky to hold such an exceeding girl in you. Our differences unite us. You and I are blessed to populate in a state where we are born equal no affair what we look like on the exterior, where we grow up, or who our parents are. A good regulation is to handle others the manner you hope they will handle you. Remind your friends at school about this regulation if they say something that hurts your feelings. Thankss once more for taking the clip to compose to me. I’m honored to hold your support and inspired by your compassion. 16. Clinton Sends His Condolences

Dear Chris, I have been believing of you a batch since I sat glued to the Television during the title game. I know that there may be nil I or anyone else can state to ease the hurting and letdown of what happened. Still, for whatever it’s worth, you, and your squad, were terrific. And portion of playing for high bets under great force per unit area is the changeless hazard of mental mistake. I know. I have lost two political races and made countless errors over the last 20 old ages. What matters is the strength, unity, and bravery you bring to the attempt. That is surely what you have done. You can ever repent what occurred but don’t Lashkar-e-Taiba it acquire you down or take away the satisfaction of what you have accomplished. You have a great hereafter. Hang in at that place. Sincerely, Bill Clinton

beloved laurence, thankyou for your gorgeous and charming letter, you brighten up my subdued life. one read the whole bally thing, dear. of class, i’d love to see you in your black frock and your white socks excessively. but most of all I want to see you take a deep breath and do whatever you must to last and happen something to be that you can love. you’re evidently a bright screw biddy, w/ a large bosom excessively and one want to wish you a ( belated ) HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY 21st b’day and happy spirit. 18. I love my married woman. My married woman is dead

D’Arline, I adore you, sweetheart. I know how much you like to hear that — but I don’t merely compose it because you like it — I write it because it makes me warm all over indoors to compose it to you. It is such a awfully long clip since I last wrote to you — about two old ages but I know you’ll excuse me because you understand how I am, obstinate and realistic ; and I thought there was no sense to writing. But now I know my beloved married woman that it is right to make what I have delayed in making, and that I have done so much in the yesteryear. I want to state you I love you. I want to love you. I ever will love you. I find it difficult to understand in my head what it means to love you after you are dead — but I still want to soothe and take attention of you — and I want you to love me and care for me. I want to hold jobs to discourse with you — I want to make small undertakings with you. I ne'er thought until merely now that we can make that. What should we make. We started to larn to do apparels together — or learn Chinese — or acquiring a film projector. Can’t I do something now? No. I am entirely without you and you were the “idea-woman” and general provoker of all our wild escapades. When you were ill you worried because you could non give me something that you wanted to and believe I needed. You needn’t have worried. Just as I told you so there was no existent demand because I loved you in so many ways so much. And now it is clearly even more true — you can give me nil now yet I love you so that you stand in my manner of loving anyone else — but I want you to stand at that place. You, dead, are so much better than anyone else alive. I know you will guarantee me that I am foolish and that you want me to hold full felicity and don’t want to be in my manner. I’ll bet you are surprised that I don’t even have a girlfriend ( except you, sweetie ) after two old ages. But you can’t help it, darling, nor can I — I don’t understand it, for I have met many misss and really nice 1s and I don’t want to stay alone — but in two or three meetings they all seem ashes. You merely are left to me. You are existent. My darling married woman, I do adore you. I love my married woman. My married woman is dead. Rich. PS Please pardon my non get offing this — but I don’t cognize your new reference.

19. Ansel Adams Discovers Love

Dear Cedric, A unusual thing happened to me today. I saw a large cumulonimbus move down over Half Dome, and it was so large and clear and superb that it made me see many things that were floating around inside of me ; things that related to those who are loved and those who are existent friends. For the first clip I know what love is ; what friends are ; and what art should be. Love is a seeking for a manner of life ; the manner that can non be followed entirely ; the resonance of all religious and physical things. Childs are non merely of flesh and blood — kids may be thoughts, ideas, emotions. The individual of the 1 who is loved is a signifier composed of a countless mirrors reflecting and lighting the powers and ideas and the emotions that are within you, and blinking another sort of visible radiation from within. No words or workss may embrace it. Friendship is another signifier of love — more inactive possibly, but full of the transmission and credence of things like cumulonimbuss and grass and the clean granite of world. Art is both love and friendly relationship, and apprehension ; the desire to give. It is non charity, which is the giving of Things, it is more than kindness which is the giving of ego. It is both the pickings and giving of beauty, the turning out to the visible radiation the interior creases of the consciousness of the spirit. It is the diversion on another plane of the worlds of the universe ; the tragic and fantastic worlds of Earth and work forces, and of all the inter-relations of these. I wish the cumulonimbus had moved up over Tahoe and allow free on you ; I could wish you nil finer. Ansel

20. Steinbeck on Love

Beloved Thom: We had your letter this forenoon. I will reply it from my point of position and of class Elaine will from hers. First—if you are in love—that’s a good thing—that’s about the best thing that can go on to anyone. Don’t let anyone do it little or light to you. Second—There are several sorts of love. One is a selfish, average, hold oning, narcissistic thing which uses love for ego. This is the ugly and stultifying sort. The other is an spring of everything good in you—of kindness and consideration and respect—not merely the societal regard of manners but the greater regard which is acknowledgment of another individual as unique and valuable. The first sort can do you ill and little and weak but the 2nd can let go of in you strength, and bravery and goodness and even wisdom you didn’t cognize you had. You say this is non puppy love. If you feel so deeply—of class it isn’t puppy love. But I don’t think you were inquiring me what you feel. You know better than anyone. What you wanted me to help you with is what to make approximately it—and that I can state you. Glory in it for one thing and be really glad and thankful for it. The object of love is the best and most beautiful. Try to populate up to it. If you love someone—there is no possible injury in stating so—only you must retrieve that some people are really diffident and sometimes the stating must take that shyness into consideration. Girls have a manner of cognizing or experiencing what you feel, but they normally like to hear it besides. It sometimes happens that what you feel is non returned for one ground or another—but that does non do your feeling less valuable and good. Last, I know your feeling because I have it and I’m glad you have it. We will be glad to run into Susan. She will be really welcome. But Elaine will do all such agreements because that is her state and she will be really glad to. She knows about love excessively and possibly she can give you more help than I can. And don’t concern about losing. If it is right, it happens—The chief thing is non to travel rapidly. Nothing good gets off. Love, Fa

Inspirational Life Coaching in a “Letter to My Nephews”

The most of import lesson is that the huge bulk of things you worry approximately will non trouble oneself you the following twenty-four hours. A twelvemonth subsequently you will non even be able to retrieve them if you try. When you grow older, you will non worry about what classs you got. You won’t worry about games you lost. You won’t worry about what other people thought about you. Most of the things you worry approximately will ne'er go on. Even if the worst things that you worry about happen, life will still travel on. Learn to bask every twenty-four hours, and seek to bask it as if it is your last. It has taken me a long clip to understand this, and I wish I had understood it sooner.

Thingss don’t make you happy, but memories will ever remain with you. Whatever it is that you buy, you will shortly acquire used to it. It will do you happy for a short piece, but it will non do you happy everlastingly. Experiences and memories can do you happy everlastingly. I can’t even retrieve most of the toys I’ve had in my life, but I still think of my times with Timothy and your Grandmom with great felicity and fancy. I remember walking Timothy to school and how happy we were. I remember embracing your Gradmom when I came place for a weekend. Those memories will ne'er travel off. The happiest memories of my friends are my travels and dinners with them, non the things I’ve bought for myself. You’ll retrieve dinners and travels with friends and household more than any glistening things you’ll of all time have.

Your household is the most of import thing you have in life. Friends, fellows, girlfriends and colleagues semen and travel, but the lone thing that you can ever number on is your household. ( If you find a friend who is ever there for you, you’re highly lucky. They exist, but they’re really rare. ) One twenty-four hours, you will hold your ain household. You must love them and look after them. You will understand one twenty-four hours that merely as your grandparents decease, your parents will every bit good. Strive to be a good boy and girl. One twenty-four hours, you will be like your parents. Your parents are non perfect, and you will non be either. But you can be loving and be a good boy and girl. One twenty-four hours you can be a good parent.

The best manner to avoid anxiousness, emphasis and sadness is to avoid internal contradiction. Don’t think that one thing is right and make the antonym. Listen to your scruples and obey it. Be a good individual and unrecorded harmonizing to your strong beliefs. You can non reply for other people, but you can ever reply for yourself. Equally long as you live harmonizing to your most basic beliefs, you will non hold declinations or guilt. You will be able to decease merrily cognizing that you looked after the hapless and destitute, that you were loving to those around you, and that you failed frequently but did your best. You will non lose a dark of slumber if you ever seek to make your best.

A Letter of Encouragement

Life is an escapade to those who dare to take the challenge. Catch on to it. Hang on with all your might. It will take you to limitless topographic points. The words “I can non ” are faltering blocks. They are a devil that must be eradicated. Make non be afraid to seek something new, even if you make errors while making it. Mistakes are how we learn. This is how we can confront life caput on. Make non be afraid to shout, either for felicity or sorrow. That is what cryings are for. Do non be afraid to express joy or be silly. If it makes you happy, or causes person else to experience the same, so by all agencies do it. Make non be afraid of what other people think. If they do non wish what they see, they can look off. Choose your friends sagely. Take merely those who accept you for what you are. It is better to travel through life without friends than to hold those who project negativeness. They are lone snares that will shortly hang you.

Peoples talk about relationships. How they search and search but ne'er find that particular person. I say this. Make non look for love. Let it happen you. True love is non something you create. It merely appears and you can’t explicate why. That is how I found my hubby. And I have ne'er regretted it. I have known people to travel from relationship to relationship seeking to happen that perfect “image” to be seen with. All the while their ain image is being dashed to pieces. These people will ne'er be happy. They merely think they are. They say to me “Oh I’ll merely maintain seeking. There are many fish in the sea” . To which I tell them “Ah yes, but you will finally run out of fish! ”
